Compassionate Reading Instruction

Watching Winnie instruct my son with such a structured program was a wonderful experience for both my son and me. My son did not even know all of his letter sounds to decode words when he started with Winnie at the end of his fourth-grade year. Because he compensated so much with memorization, he was often overlooked or, because he also has ADHD, his difficulty was attributed to inattentiveness or hyperactivity instead of a learning disability. Winnie was incredibly patient and knowledgeable. She developed a relationship with him and kept him engaged by using humor, praise and encouragement. My son is now in the 5th grade. His time with Winnie not only helped him with reading but also improved his self-confidence and helped my own relationship with him. We’ve had tutors before, which my son used to dread, and we rarely saw much improvement, but Winnie changed all of that.

Mrs. Winnie is a great teacher. She is very kind. I enjoyed talking with her about dinosaurs. She helped me a lot with my reading.

After years of searching for someone who could provide tutoring services for our child, we were connected to Mrs. Winnie. We could not have asked for a better tutor for our son. She exceeded our expectations! Not only did we see exponential growth in our son’s phonological awareness and reading comprehension, but he also became more confident in his ability to learn. It was also refreshing to have someone tutoring our son that made it a point to get to know about him and his interest. I would highly recommend Mrs. Winnie. She is simply the best!

Ms. Winnie is great with her student clients. Ms. Winnie communicates with parents throughout her sessions with your child and goes above and beyond to meet your child’s needs. Ms. Winnie is great about sharing moments of pride she sees within your child – their good behaviors and achievements; my daughter is always excited to attend each one of her sessions.

After the fall semester of 1^st grade, my son was not picking up the skills he needed to be a successful reader. This led to a decrease in his confidence and a resistance to reading activities. I knew we had to intervene to keep him on the right path and I am so grateful that we enlisted Winnie for that job. Winnie is very knowledgeable and engaging. She taught the strategies that my son needed with lessons that brought in elements of things he loves, like Star Wars and Marvel. She provided summary sessions, which I shared with his teacher so she could reinforce skills that he was working on with Winnie. After a few sessions with Winnie, I saw an increase in my son’s confidence and, as sessions progressed, he continued to soar. He was so proud when he “graduated” and became a “Jedi Reading Master” and he is right where he needs to be at the beginning of 2^nd grade. Daily reading is an enjoyable experience at our house and this is priceless.
